Union Berlin confirmed the decision after Saturday afternoon’s defeat to bottom side 1. FC Heidenheim, bringing an end to Baumgart’s short and ultimately challenging tenure. Assistant coaches Danilo de Souza and Kevin McKenna will also leave the club.
Baumgart, who took charge in December 2024, endured a difficult run in the dugout, overseeing just two wins from his last 14 league matches. The loss to Heidenheim proved decisive, with Union now sitting only seven points clear of the relegation play-off place.
“We would like to thank Steffen, Danilo and Kevin for their work… We wish them all the best, both professionally and personally,” said Horst Heldt, director of men’s professional football at 1. FC Union Berlin.
For the remainder of the season, the first team will be led by Marie-Louise Eta, who previously coached the club’s U-19s and is set to become head coach of the women’s first team.
“One of Union’s strengths has always been, and remains, the ability to pull together in such situations,” she said. “And, of course, I am convinced that we will secure the crucial points with the team.”
