Roma were dealt their first defeat of preseason as Aston Villa beat them 4-0 earlier this evening.
Stephan El Shaarawy, who wore the captain’s armband during tonight’s display, spoke to reporters at full-time.
“We know we have to work harder; they had a higher pace. Obviously, losing is never nice; we have to focus on having the best possible condition by August 23rd.”
“We’re trying to do what Gasperini asks of us as best we can. Maybe we’re a little lacking in physical form right now, but we have to work. I think we’re at a point where we shouldn’t think too much about the result.”
“The captain’s armband is a source of pride and an honor. I absolutely have to focus on giving my best, as I always do, with or without the armband. It’s a great recognition, and I’m proud of it. But my goal, and everyone’s, is to give our all as a team and try to get to the start of the league season feeling confident.”
“Now we’ve started from scratch with a great coach, who has the mentality of going forward and playing with courage, with the intensity to win the game.”
“Inside the locker room there’s a calm atmosphere, we’re aware that these games also help us understand where we’re going wrong and what we can improve on. They’re pre-season games that help us analyze our mistakes and improve.”
