Bolton Wanderers boss Steven Schumacher has confirmed Brighton have been in touch over Amario Cozier-Duberry, who is on the radar of Sheffield United.
Bolton Wanderers boss Steven Schumacher has revealed that Brighton have been in touch over Amario Cozier-Duberry, as he insists the player is happy at the club despite talk he could leave in January.
The 20-year-old winger joined the Trotters on loan from Brighton in the summer window, in a deal that was seen as a real coup for the League One side.
Cozier-Duberry has justified that excitement in the opening month of the campaign, as he has quickly established himself as a key player for the team, and he has already made some big contributions to help Bolton’s promotion push.
The youngster has already registered two goals and two assists in nine League One outings so far this term, whilst also bagging a goal in the League Cup too.
Even though Cozier-Duberry joined on a season-long loan, it has been reported that Brighton could recall the player in January, whether that’s to integrate him in Fabian Hurzeler’s squad, or to send him elsewhere.
And, it has been suggested that Sheffield United are monitoring the England youth international ahead of the winter window, with the prospect of playing at a higher level sure to appeal to Brighton and Cozier-Duberry.
However, speaking to the Bolton News, Schumacher explained that Cozier-Duberry is enjoying his football right now, as he also stated that Brighton loans manager Gordon Greer had been in touch over the attacker, with the top-flight outfit pleased at his progress.
“Brighton are obviously a huge Premier League club, and I understand the importance of getting their young players out in an environment that's going to help them flourish," the Wanderers boss said.
"I think they can see that we're taking care of him, and he would probably tell them that he's enjoying himself, although I don't want to put words in Amario's mouth.
“I think he’d say he is enjoying what he's doing, and they can see him improving, so from our point of view, we just keep doing that.
“We knew we’d signed a good player on loan because we’d done our homework on him. We’d got character references from people who had worked with him at Blackburn last season who said that coming down to this level, where he might get more space and perhaps not come up against as many physical full-backs and wing-backs, would mean he could really shine.”
Ultimately, this is something that’s out of Bolton’s control, so it’s not something that Schumacher will be overly worried about, especially at the moment, as they know Cozier-Duberry will definitely be around until January at least.
As he says, Brighton are pleased with the progress he is making, and the club and the player will decide on his next move in January if any options materialise.
But, Bolton would have known this was a possibility when they agreed to the recall clause, so all they can do is have potential replacements lined up in the New Year if they do have to act.
Of course, it would be a blow to lose Cozier-Duberry mid-season if he did depart, but, in the bigger picture, Bolton and Schumacher are proving to Premier League clubs that they are a good destination for younger players to develop, which will help them attract talent in the future.
