STJD sets date for Athletico-PR fan who hit Corinthians keeper

Next Monday, November 10, the STJD (Superior Court of Sports Justice) will judge the incidents in the match between Athletico-PR and Corinthians, at Ligga Arena, in late August, for the first leg of the Copa do Brasil quarterfinals. One of the incidents occurred in the stoppage time of the match, at 52 minutes, when a fan of the opposing team invaded the pitch and attacked goalkeeper Hugo Souza.

In light of these events, Athletico was charged and reported based on article 213, sections II and III, combined with 184 of the Brazilian Code of Sports Justice (CBJD). The section states: “failing to take measures capable of preventing and repressing: invasion of the field or location of the sports event and throwing objects onto the field or location of the sports event. When the agent, through more than one action or omission, commits two or more infractions, the penalties are applied cumulatively.”

Athletico-PR may also be punished with a fine ranging from R$ 100 to R$ 100,000, in addition to the possibility of losing home field advantage for one to ten matches. In its defense, the Paraná team is expected to argue that the fan was identified and taken to the police station moments after the incident.

In this situation, the CBJD states that the institution may be exempted from responsibilities, as the fan was identified. However, the final decision rests with the STJD. If punished, Athletico-PR may have to play without fans in the last round of Série B, scheduled for November 23, against América-MG, as the punishment does not necessarily need to be served in the Copa do Brasil.

After the attack on Hugo Souza, the Athletico-PR fan was taken to the Mobile Police Station for Football and Events (Demafe) of the Paraná Civil Police, being charged under an article of the General Sports Law that addresses “promoting turmoil, practicing or inciting violence or invading restricted areas at sports events.” Hours later, the individual recorded a video apologizing for the incident.

In the match report, referee Wilton Pereira Sampaio stated: “At 52 minutes of the second half, a fan of the home team invaded the pitch heading towards goalkeeper Hugo de Souza Nogueira, of the Corinthians team, and pushed him, being restrained shortly after by athletes and security. At the same time, several disposable cups containing unidentified liquids were thrown onto the pitch from the home team's fans.”
