Glasgow Rangers picked up a crucial 1-0 win away at St.Mirren this afternoon, courtesy of a first-half goal from January signing Tuur Rommens, keeping their title hopes alive.
As It Happened
Rangers started strongly, winning themselves two corners in the opening minutes before Djeidi Gassama’s right footed shot fired wide of the post. The Gers continued to apply pressure and forced St.Mirren goalkeeper Shamal George into his first save of the afternoon after 12 minutes to prevent Ryan Don Naderi netting from close range.
Just before the twenty minute mark, a clash of heads between two St.Mirren players saw Jayden Richardson withdrawn and replaced by Allan Campbell, whilst Alex Gogic carried on playing despite having a cut head. The visitors gained the lead in the 31st minute when Rommens turned home Nico Raskin’s cross to give Rangers the opener and a potentially huge goal for their title hopes.
Rommens was at the centre of attention again ten minutes later when he set up Youssef Chermiti but the Portugese forward couldn’t find the net from close range. Jack Butland was called into action for the first time shortly before the break, denying Dan Nlundulu’s header inisde the penalty area, bringing the first half to a close with Rangers leading.
Danny Röhl turned to his bench early in the second-half with Andreas Skov-Olsen replacing Gassama. James Tavernier took on a long-range strike moments later but it was well saved by George.
The Saints’ second change of the afternoon saw Jake Young replace Richard King. The away side also made a change with just 20 minutes left on the clock, which saw Thelo Aasgaard and Connor Barron introduced in favour of Chermiti and Tochi Chukwuani. Meanwhile, St.Mirren’s final substitution saw Scott Tanser withdrawn for Jonah Ayunga for the remainder of the game.
With ten minutes remaining, Rommens and Naderi were replaced by Bojan Miovski and Jayden Meghoma. Mikey Moore forced a strong save out of George from inside the area, as the goalkeeper got down low to push the Tottenham loanee’s strike away. As four minutes of additional time were announced, Rangers had the ball in the net for a second time through Aasgaard but the Norweigan was ruled offside, meaning the goal was subsequently chalked off.
Rangers defender Nasser Djiga picked up the first and only yellow card of the game in the 92nd minute following a foul on Nlundulu, bringing the game to an end with Rangers securing a vital win.
