As expected, Stuttgart dominated possession from the first whistle against the 34th-placed team in the Europa League table. In particular, Lazar Jovanović, who has only played 50 minutes of first-team football since signing for the club in the summer, had a positive start from the right wing.
It took them a while to create a clear-cut chance, however. Instead, Maccabi Tel Aviv survived a near own-goal when Heitor blocked Maximilian Mittelstädt’s delivery in the 13th minute.
The German international assisted the opening goal for his fellow fullback in Stuttgart’s first real chance, though. Lorenz Assignon, who was sent off less than ten minutes after coming on as a substitute in the heavy defeat to Bayern, scored his first Stuttgart goal with a low driven volley.
Roi Mishpati made his first save of the evening from Deniz Undav’s weak effort after the half-hour mark. Three minutes later, Undav played a swift one-two with Angelo Stiller before putting it on the plate for Tiago Tomás. The Portuguese attacker scored at MHP Arena for the first time since his return to the club in the summer.
Tiago Tomás’ goal needed a lengthy VAR check to be given the all-clear for a potential foul by Ramon Hendriks in the buildup. Shortly before the half-time whistle, Marian Barbu decided against a penalty after consulting the technology following a challenge on Tomás.
The Romanian referee pointed to the spot two minutes after the restart, though. Heitor was penalized for a handball, and Mittelstädt converted the penalty-kick to extend Stuttgart’s lead. Maccabi Tel Aviv’s response was quick to restore the two-goal deficit.
Roy Revivo acted quickly to beat the unconvincing Alexander Nübel for the third goal of the game by a fullback. Half-time substitute Dor Peretz nearly made it interesting around the hour mark, but the captain’s shot from a difficult angle narrowly missed the target.
Sebastian Hoeneß responded to Maccabi’s best spell by introducing three regular starters with Chema Andrés, Jamie Leweling, and Bilal El Khannouss entering the pitch as substitutes.
The latter was cautioned three minutes after coming on, which means he’s out of Stuttgart’s trip to face AS Roma for accumulated yellow cards. Meanwhile, the visitors continued their progress as Nübel had to be alert to deny Revivo a second-half brace.
The last 15 minutes of the game were largely uneventful in both penalty boxes. That was until Josha Vagnoman was the fourth fullback to get into the scoresheet with a clinical header from a cross by fellow substitute Badredine Bouanani.
The result extended Stuttgart’s winning streak in the Europa League to three games. Including their two DFB-Pokal wins, Stuttgart are victorious in each of their last five cup encounters. They have also won each of their first three home games of the European campaign.
Stuttgart will face Werder Bremen and TSG Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga before the Winterpause. Their last two league phase fixtures will be against Roma and Young Boys in January 2026.
