AS Roma are keen on signing Sunderland's promotion-winning captain Dan Neil this summer.

Sunderland captain Dan Neil could be in line to make an eight-figure move to Serie A giants AS Roma, according to reports.

The 23-year-old guided his boyhood club back to the Premier League last week under the Wembley arch, and claims from The Sun suggest that promotion could be his parting gift to the club that gave him his big break.

According to the report, Roma are keen to bring the Englishman over to Italy, having seen the success of British players such as Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour at Napoli, and are prepared to lay out £15m to sign the Sunderland skipper.

In an extremely proud moment for the club, they were guided back to the promised land by one of their own. Neil, a product of the Academy of Light, adorned the armband at Wembley as he had done for most of the season.

Now, reports from The Sun suggest that taking his boyhood club back up to the Premier League could've been his final action in the famous red and white stripes.

Serie A giants AS Roma are said to be keen on signing the 23-year-old, having seen Napoli's success with British players that they brought over from the English top flight.

Roma finished fifth in the Italian top flight last season, and are preparing for life under their reported new manager, Gian Piero Gasperini, following the retirement of previous manager Claudio Ranieri.

After completing what would've been the dream for the midfielder, he must now consider whether he wants to remain on Wearside and further cement his legacy, or try his hand in Europe.

Roma will be able to offer Neil European football in the Europa League next season, having finished fifth in Serie A. This could be a rather tantalising prospect for the youngster.

However, he will know how much his departure will impact his boyhood club, who are already preparing to lose Jobe Bellingham this summer. To lose the skipper as well could be a disaster heading into the Premier League.

Having seen British players thrive in Serie A and European football being on the table, the move will undoubtedly be an interesting one for Neil. But, it will likely be very difficult to prize him away from newly-promoted Sunderland, where he is adored.
