We looked at three clubs who should be keeping tabs on Sunderland striker Ahmed Abdullahi amid reported interest from League One clubs.
Sunderland striker Ahmed Abdullahi could be allowed to leave the club before the end of the summer transfer window amid reported interest from a host of League One clubs.
After scoring 21 goals in 38 appearances for Genk's reserve team and featuring twice for the senior side, Abdullahi made the move to Sunderland last summer for a fee that was claimed to be in the region of €3 million (£2.5 million).
However, Abdullahi has not made a single appearance for the Black Cats so far, and following their promotion to the Premier League, it seems he has now been deemed surplus to requirements by head coach Regis Le Bris.
According to TEAMtalk, Abdullahi is one of five players who have been given the green light to leave the Stadium of Light this summer, along with Alan Browne, Nectarios Triantis, Ian Poveda and Milan Aleksic, and the 21-year-old is said to be attracting attention from a number of League One clubs.
With that in mind, we looked at three third tier sides who should consider making a move for Abdullahi before the transfer deadline.
It has been a busy summer for Bolton Wanderers with 12 new signings arriving at the Toughsheet Community Stadium, but the failure to recruit a prolific striker has been a frustration for big manager Steven Schumacher.
Schumacher made it clear last month that he is hoping to sign two new strikers before the end of the transfer window, but since those comments, only one number nine has been brought in, with Mason Burstow joining on loan from Hull City.
Burstow has made a strong start to his time in Lancashire, scoring two goals in his first five appearances, but the Trotters' still have a lack of killer instinct in front of goal, and that was evident once again as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Reading on Wednesday night after failing to take a host of chances during what was a dominant performance.
With question marks over whether his existing strikers can fire the club to promotion, Schumacher may be reluctant to take a gamble on another unproven forward in Abdullahi, but if he can help him to deliver on his potential, he could prove to be a shrewd addition.
After Rob Couhig's takeover in May brought Dai Yongge's nightmare tenure to an end, Reading went into the new season full of optimism, but the feel-good factor around the club has not been reflected on the pitch so far.
Having lost their opening three league games, the Royals finally registered their first point of the season as they drew 1-1 at Bolton, but it was far from a convincing performance, and aside from Andre Garcia's late equaliser, they struggled to create any meaningful chances.
With the squad still lacking depth and quality in certain areas, Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan and Mark O'Mahony are currently Reading's only senior strikers, meaning it is a position that manager Noel Hunt will certainly be keen to strengthen before the end of the window.
Given that there is slightly less pressure on the Royals to achieve promotion this season than Bolton, Hunt may be more willing to take a chance on Abdullahi, and as the Irishman has a proven track record of developing young players, the Select Car Leasing Stadium could be the perfect destination for the Sunderland man.
After their relegation from the Championship, Plymouth Argyle were widely tipped to be one of the main promotion contenders in League One this season, but it has been a nightmare start to the campaign for Tom Cleverley's side.
The Pilgrims have lost all of their opening four league games of the season, and it does not get much easier with fixtures against Blackpool, Cardiff City, Stockport County and Luton Town to come over the next few weeks, highlighting the urgent need for further reinforcements.
Argyle have lost a host of key players this summer following relegation, with star striker Ryan Hardie one of those to depart, and based on the early evidence, new signings Owen Oseni and Aribim Pepple will struggle to replace his goals.
Plymouth are in desperate need of a prolific goalscorer, and while there is no guarantee that Abdullahi would be able to deliver at League One level, his record for Genk's reserve team suggests that he could be a potential solution for the Devon outfit if given a consistent run of games.
