In a recent post on X, journalist Philip Hinze mentioned that Sunderland are back in the race to sign Red Bull Leipzig full-back Lutsharel Geertruida permanently this summer. It has been stated that the Black Cats would have to compete with other clubs from the Premier League, Serie A and La Liga in pursuit of the Dutch defender in this transfer window.

Geertruida’s Solid Loan Spell At Sunderland

The 25-year-old had a good loan spell at the Wearside club last season when he put in a handful of solid displays for them in the Premier League. Geetruida played in 31 matches for Sunderland in the previous campaign but failed to score or create a goal for them in various competitions.

The Dutch sensation is currently among the most talented right-backs in his homeland. Therefore, Sunderland would do well to lure him to the Stadium of Light later this year.

His current contract with RB Leipzig will run out in the summer of 2029, which could make it difficult for the Black Cats to land him on a cut-price deal in this transfer period.

Will Geertruida Be A Good Choice For Sunderland?

Geertruida can get stuck in with some solid tackles inside his half. He has got the awareness to read the danger well and secure the ball back for his team inside his half.

The Dutch defensive ace doesn’t hesitate to put his foot through the ball when required and is an accurate passer as well. However, Geertruida has to find a way to add a few goals and assists to his game. He mainly functions as a right-back but can also serve as a centre-back if told to do so by his manager.

We can expect Geetruida to bring more quality and depth to Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris’ defence. He proved himself to be an important member of the Wearside club’s squad last season and is capable of challenging for regular first-team football at the Stadium of Light next season.

At 25, Geertruida has his best years ahead of him, which makes him a decent choice for the Black Cats to pursue this summer. Thus, Le Bris should focus on stepping up their efforts to land him in this transfer period.
