Sunderland are reportedly facing mounting competition from Barcelona and Bournemouth for Bologna defender Jhon Lucumi this summer.

Il Resto del Carlino reports that Sunderland retain long-standing interest in the 28-year-old and made an approach after a release clause expired, which Bologna rejected.

The Black Cats cooled their pursuit in January after failing to strike a deal last summer, but they continue to monitor his situation, with a fee around £22 million now being suggested.

Despite a strong Serie A campaign, Lucumi has not agreed fresh terms and is under contract until 2027. His representatives are said to be exploring options, and Bologna are understood to be open to a sale to protect his value.

Barcelona are said to be monitoring him as a more affordable alternative to Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni. Bournemouth are also said to be weighing a move as they assess potential replacements for Marcos Senesi.

Fenerbahce and Galatasaray, from Türkiye, are likewise credited with strong interest and the resources to join the race.

Bologna are believed to be factoring the upcoming World Cup into their plans, with a standout tournament potentially pushing up his price and complicating Sunderland’s chances.
