Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka has been overlooked for the Premier League’s official Transfer of the Season. Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens took the prize after eight clean sheets in 32 games, helping secure a Champions League return.
Xhaka had been among the nominees, alongside Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Arsenal’s Premier League winner Viktor Gyokeres, Chelsea forward Joao Pedro, Bournemouth defender Adrien Truffert and Manchester City pair Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo.
The Swiss midfielder was widely viewed as a frontrunner after driving Sunderland’s impressive first campaign back in the top flight and securing Europa League football. He made 34 appearances in all competitions, scoring one and supplying six assists, while his influence extended beyond the numbers.
“Even the people closest to me were saying: 'Why are you going back to the Premier League to join Sunderland?’ I came back because I love the challenge and I had the feeling I need a new challenge. After two years in Germany, where in the first year we won nearly everything, unbeaten in the Bundesliga, won the cup, lost the final of Europa League, which was very painful.”
He was speaking to BBC Sport earlier this year.
