Sunderland have played down links to Everton winger Dwight McNeil, with focus fixed on two deadline-day priorities.

Sunderland Echo understands there is no active interest in the 25-year-old, while efforts centre on Nilson Angulo arriving and Simon Adingra departing.

Patrick Roberts has joined Birmingham City and Leo Hjelde has also left as Régis Le Bris reshapes his squad.

He joined Everton from Burnley in July 2022 on a five-year deal for around £20 million including add-ons.

He scored his first Everton goal at Southampton in October 2022, then struck twice against Crystal Palace in September 2024, helping Everton secure their first league win of the season.

There are no discussions with Sunderland and no approach is planned at this stage.

Midfielder Harrison Jones is not expected to leave on loan this month despite strong EFL interest, his plans complicated by injury.

He was forced off in a Premier League International Cup match against Borussia Dortmund earlier this year, effectively ruling out a January move.

Sunderland now anticipate he will stay on Wearside until the summer, with a permanent move later this year possible. His contract expires this summer, though the club hold an option for a further 12 months.

The hierarchy support facilitating what best aids his development, and Le Bris kept him last summer to provide cover during AFCON and for injuries.
