Sunderland have dismissed reports of opening talks over a £40million move for AS Monaco striker Folarin Balogun.

According to Sunderland Echo, club sources insist no discussions have taken place and that suggestions of talks starting on Monday are incorrect.

Sunderland’s stance is that there are no active talks for Balogun. The recruitment team, led by head coach Régis Le Bris, continues to assess targets ahead of the new campaign.

The touted fee would have ranked among the biggest in the club’s history and drew significant attention from supporters. As things stand, there is no substance to claims of a £40million deal.

Sunderland are expected to remain busy before the deadline, mindful of the extra demands that European football will bring. They will invest when the right player and terms align, but are distancing themselves from the latest Balogun speculation.

While the forward has featured in wider discussion around attacking options, there has been no contact or negotiation from Sunderland’s side.
