Sunderland supporters travelling to Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby at Newcastle United will be escorted from Newcastle Central Station to St James’ Park as part of a major policing and safety operation for the midday kick-off. Thousands of Black Cats fans are expected on Tyneside.
Newcastle City Council said in a statement that a police-supported escort for away fans will leave Central Station at 10.15am, mirroring December’s reverse fixture in Sunderland. Late arrivals could face delays and risk missing the start, so fans are urged to reach the station before that time.
Inside the station, officers and event staff will direct supporters to a designated gathering area. The escort does not affect official club coaches, which will arrive directly at the stadium. Public transport will be extremely busy, with Metro and rail on a standard Sunday timetable, so extra time and queues are expected.
Fans travelling from Durham or Darlington should plan alternatives, as engineering works mean no direct trains to Newcastle and a limited rail replacement service. Drivers should expect road closures around Central Station, St James Boulevard and Barrack Road.
A significantly increased police presence will be in place across Newcastle city centre and around St James’ Park. Additional officers will also patrol both city centres. There will be zero tolerance for disorder, with offenders facing criminal prosecution, potential football banning orders and possible club action.
