Sunderland ‘in talks’ with former Southampton, West Ham and Crystal Palace defender Jose Fonte | OneFootball

The Sun reports that Sunderland are in talks with former Portugal international Jose Fonte, formerly of West Ham, over a role on Régis Le Bris’ coaching staff.

Talks are ongoing and progressing, although nothing has been finalised at this stage.

Fonte retired in May after 882 senior appearances and winning the European Championship with Portugal in 2016. The 42-year-old would bring significant Premier League and international experience if an agreement is reached.

Le Bris’ first-team squad returned for pre-season training at the Academy of Light on Thursday, and Fonte was not present while negotiations continue.

The former centre-back spent seven years at Southampton, playing a major role in their climb from League One to the Premier League. He joined from Crystal Palace in 2010 and made almost 300 appearances.

His arrival would be a notable addition to the backroom as Sunderland prepare for domestic and European football. Fonte is understood to be ready to begin coaching, and the club are working to see if a deal can be agreed. No appointment has been confirmed.
