Sunderland are being linked with Liverpool and England midfielder Harvey Elliott as they prepare for a Europa League campaign next season.

"Some of the promoted clubs, possibly even Sunderland, is something I’ve been hearing as to where he might be going. We’ll see where that all ends up, but it’s been a very sad episode and one that should have been corrected in some way." The comments were made on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast.

The 23-year-old moved to Villa Park late in the summer window and made nine appearances for Unai Emery’s side, with three starts, before heading back to Anfield.

There is a suggestion the versatile midfielder could be available for around £25m.

Sunday’s outstanding display against Chelsea capped a remarkable first season back in the Premier League as the Black Cats claimed seventh.

In UEFA’s secondary competition they could face AC Milan, Juventus, Marseille or Bayer Leverkusen, and a busier schedule means Regis Le Bris’ squad will need to be bolstered during the window.
