Sunderland ‘make enquiry’ for Óscar Mingueza as Celta confirm free exit

Sunderland have lodged an enquiry for Spanish defender Óscar Mingueza, according to reports in Italy, which also say Atalanta and Como have moved early.

He will leave Celta Vigo this summer as a free agent.

The 27-year-old emerged from Barcelona's academy and has four caps for Spain, becoming a regular at Celta since 2022. Primarily a right back, he can also operate at left back and centre back.

Sunderland need to bolster their defence after Dennis Cirkin's departure and with Lutsharel Geertruida's future still unresolved. They remain in talks to potentially bring him back on a permanent deal, but they did not trigger their option to buy and a return next season is far from certain.

Mingueza made 34 La Liga appearances last season, plus 11 in the Europa League.
