Sunderland’s net spend sits sixth in the Premier League this season, underlining an ambitious return to the top flight as the run-in begins.
Only Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham and Manchester United have spent more, with Sunderland at €155.59m. According to Transfermarkt, that figure would be higher without the sales of Jobe Bellingham and Tom Watson for €42.5m combined.
A 2-1 comeback at Newcastle United before the international break lifted the Black Cats to 11th, a point above their rivals and three off seventh-place Brentford. An outside chance of Europe remains, and any relegation concerns were parked long ago.
That progress has been fuelled by heavy investment, with Habib Diarra, Brian Brobbey and Chemsdine Talbi among the big-money arrivals.
Tottenham’s outlay stands out given they are 17th, a point above the relegation zone and 13 points behind Sunderland, whom they face next Sunday.
At the other end, Chelsea’s €4.90m net spend is the lowest negative figure, aided by significant departures including Noni Madueke, Christopher Nkunku, Joao Felix and Lesley Ugochukwu.
Brentford, Brighton, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bournemouth posted profits of €+50.06m, €+63.15m, €+81.10m and €+130.31m respectively across the season.
