According to Sunderland Echo, Sunderland could be well represented at this summer’s World Cup in North America after qualifying ended and the 48-nation line-up was confirmed.
Lutsharel Geertruida made three qualifiers and featured in a 1-1 with Ecuador, and it would be a shock if Ronald Koeman left out the 20-cap player. Brian Brobbey has one goal in 10 caps and, despite missing qualifying, looks a good Plan B.
Morocco qualified with a 100% record. Chemsdine Talbi played 13 qualifying minutes but has four caps. Ecuador’s Nilson Angulo has 12 caps, featured in a 1-0 win over Argentina, and will be there if fit, while Omar Alderete is a cornerstone for Los Guaraníes and, if fit, will start.
Wilson Isidor switched to Haiti, earned two caps and a first goal, a 1-1 equaliser against Iceland, and his experience will be vital for a first World Cup since 1974. Habib Diarra has four goals in 18 caps and, with improving form, will surely make Senegal’s squad.
Noah Sadiki played 73 minutes in the intercontinental play-off and is pivotal, with Arthur Masuaku in DR Congo’s squad. Robin Roefs is uncapped, and injury likely denied him minutes against Norway or Ecuador.
Granit Xhaka captained Switzerland’s unbeaten campaign, played all but 14 minutes and scored two, and this could be his last World Cup. English call-ups under Thomas Tuchel look almost impossible, especially Chris Rigg, while Nordi Mukiele, capped once by France in 2021, appears unlikely despite his versatility.
