Sunderland have turned down Chelsea’s opening offer for Granit Xhaka, maintaining a firm stance over the midfielder’s future.
According to The Athletic, the offer was £eight million, well under half of what Sunderland paid to sign him from Bayer Leverkusen last summer.
The Black Cats insist they are under no financial pressure to sell and regard the influential midfielder as not for sale.
Chelsea are said to view the price as reasonable given Xhaka’s age, but a markedly higher proposal would be needed to test Sunderland’s position.
Xhaka is believed to be open to a move to Stamford Bridge, where he would be reunited with head coach Xabi Alonso after the pair won the league and cup double at Bayer Leverkusen.
That stance points to further dialogue between the clubs, although there remains a significant gap between them at this stage.
