Sunderland Echo understands that Sunderland have released young goalkeeper Dan Cameron as part of an academy reshuffle after more than a decade at the club.
The 20-year-old has been with the Black Cats since under-10 level and has trained with the first team on multiple occasions.
His contract expires in June and the club have not triggered a one-year extension, allowing him to pursue regular senior minutes elsewhere with a clearer path to first-team football.
He spent the early part of the season on loan at Hebburn Town in the seventh tier, earning strong reviews during their promotion-winning campaign. He was later recalled and joined Boston United in the National League, two divisions higher, where he played nine full matches.
Cameron turns 21 in September and departs as part of the club’s yearly academy review.
Hebburn boss Daniel Moore said in February he thinks Cameron could play at a high level, citing his background, attitude and willingness to embrace non-league football. He added that EFL clubs may view that positively and hoped the next step would be league football.
