Sunderland are among European clubs linked with Paraguay midfielder Matias Galarza after the World Cup round of 16 defeat to France. SportDog reports the Black Cats have shown interest, with Olympiakos and Getafe leading the chase, and Monza and Strasbourg also in contention.

The 24-year-old plays for CA Talleres and has more than two years left on his contract. He previously spent two seasons at Genk, featuring in qualifying rounds of the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League.

Paraguay’s campaign ended when Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe scored a penalty to send France through. Sunderland’s Omar Alderete and former Newcastle winger Miguel Almiron both started for Gustavo Alfaro’s side.

Paraguay’s approach drew criticism for using so-called dark arts to disrupt their opponents. Didier Deschamps noted his team finished with three bookings, said he could do without the insults, and stressed there were no incidents at the end, adding that qualification was what mattered.

Galarza came under fire for a first-half clash with Mbappe that BBC pundit Joe Hart felt could have resulted in a red card.
