Sunderland stance on Timur Tutierov shifts after York City showing | OneFootball

Sunderland now appear likely to keep Timur Tutierov this summer after his eye-catching outing at York City.

According to Sunderland Echo, club sources indicate the winger is currently expected to remain, a shift from the stance at the end of last season.

Back then, Tutierov was viewed as a likely departure in a deal akin to those involving academy products Zak Johnson and Harrison Jones. As it stands, that is no longer the expectation, though the picture can still change during the window.

Régis Le Bris named Tutierov in his starting XI for the opening pre-season friendly at York, and the 20-year-old scored in an impressive display.

Pre-season selections rarely offer firm conclusions, but they can hint at internal thinking. Tutierov could now receive further run-outs before a decision is made on the best route for his development.

Another EFL loan remains possible. He spent last season with Exeter City, and regular senior minutes could again be judged more useful than fringe involvement under Le Bris. There may also be chances to feature in domestic cup and European squads during a demanding campaign.

Tutierov joined from Ukrainian club Kolos Kovalivka in April 2023, having already been named in senior matchday squads in his country’s top flight. His contract expires next summer, so Sunderland must weigh the longer-term picture, but for now he looks set to stay on Wearside rather than leave permanently.
