Sunderland summer transfers predicted after derby win

Sunderland’s mood is soaring after a 2-1 comeback at Newcastle United, and with 43 points on the board and seven games remaining heading into the international break, attention is turning to how they might strengthen this summer.

At St James’ Park, Anthony Gordon struck first for the hosts before Chemsdine Talbi and Brian Brobbey flipped the derby, completing a league double. According to Sunderland Echo, X’s AI chatbot, Grok, was tasked with predicting the club’s window.

The exercise reflects a season in which the backline has largely held firm while the attack has misfired, leaving depth in both areas to address.

Predicted arrivals include Armand Lauriente from Sassuolo for £18 million to add pace and goal threat out wide, Charlie Cresswell, formerly of Leeds and now at Toulouse, for £12 million to deepen centre-back cover, and FC Porto striker Samu Aghehowa for £35 million to supply goals alongside Brobbey.

Forecast departures are 32-year-old Mozambique international Reinildo Mandava for about £8 million to refresh full-back options and trim wages given a deal to 2027, Abdoullah Ba for £2.5 million to secure regular minutes and open space in midfield, and 31-year-old captain Luke O’Nien for £3 million with a contract to 2027 and a club option.

These remain projections from Grok rather than firm plans, and any Aghehowa pursuit could require a record fee. With relegation not a concern and an outside chance of Europe, Sunderland’s stance in the market could be bolder.
