Sunderland’s Tyne-Wear derby win has left them eyeing a late push for Europe, a run that could also deliver a sizeable financial uplift. Sunderland Echo notes that Premier League merit payments and TV facility fees would rise if they climb the table.

Sunday’s victory at St James Park moved them into 11th going into the final international break. Brian Brobbey struck in stoppage time to seal a league double over Newcastle and extend their unbeaten derby run to an 11th game.

The result also kept alive hopes of only a second European campaign in the club’s history, and a first since they entered the Cup Winners’ Cup after their shock 1973 FA Cup final win against Leeds United.

Each club receives an equal-share payment, then a merit sum that increases by position. Last season’s champions Liverpool earned an additional £32.3m, while bottom club Southampton received £1.6m.

Using the 2024/25 scale, 11th was worth £26.5m and 12th £23.8m in merit money, with 1st at £53.1m and 20th at £2.7m.

Televised matches add further income. Sky Sports and TNT Sports pay a facility fee averaging about £830,000 per game, and Sunderland’s 17 live selections are estimated at around £14.6m so far.
