Sunderland’s option to buy Lutsharel Geertruida has expired and is no longer valid, according to Sky Germany, with the clause valued at about £19.9m. It is said to have lapsed on Wednesday.
Several clubs are interested, including sides from the Premier League, Serie A and La Liga, and RB Leipzig aim to sell the defender permanently this summer. Following fresh talks, Sunderland are back in the race but are seeking a lower fee and allowed the option to lapse. No decision has been made.
Geertruida spent the 2025/26 season on loan at the Stadium of Light after joining from Leipzig last summer. Sunderland’s retained list, published this week, shows that discussions over his future remain ongoing.
Head coach Regis Le Bris said late in the campaign that he did not know whether the Dutchman would be part of his squad next term. He stressed the focus was on finishing the season, with any call to follow between the player, Sunderland and Leipzig.
Geertruida made 28 Premier League appearances last season, including 17 starts. He could also use the upcoming World Cup to enhance his prospects after a late call-up to the Netherlands squad.
