Sunderland’s Europa League return hands Florent Ghisolfi a complex registration puzzle, with quotas likely to shape summer recruitment and exits. It is not a crisis, but he and Régis Le Bris must balance the mix.

According to Sunderland Echo, UEFA’s March 2026 guidance caps List A at 25 and requires eight locally trained players. If the quota is not met, the squad size is reduced. Only four of the eight can be association-trained, the rest must be club-trained.

Departures for Dennis Cirkin and Bertrand Traoré should not harm the association-trained tally, with Leo Hjelde, Simon Moore, Dan Ballard, Luke O’Nien and Romaine Mundle appearing to fit, Ballard via Arsenal. Trai Hume does not count because he developed at Linfield under the Northern Ireland FA.

Chris Rigg is club-trained but can sit on List B at 18. Anthony Patterson would qualify yet is expected to move on, and Eliezer Mayenda’s loan to Hibernian interrupts club-trained status. List B is unlimited for players born on or after one January 2005 with two uninterrupted years at the club. Clubs must list at least two goalkeepers on List A and three overall.

Heavy recruitment, especially from overseas, could squeeze List A and force omissions. The List A deadline is two September 2026, List B can be updated until 23:59 CET on the day before matches, and up to three players can be added pre-knockouts by four February 2027. English-trained profiles may become more attractive, while any Romaine Mundle exit would also alter the balance.
