Sunderland’s Melker Ellborg omitted as Graham Potter names Sweden’s World Cup squad | OneFootball

Sunderland goalkeeper Melker Ellborg has been left out of Sweden’s World Cup squad after Graham Potter confirmed his 26-man selection this week.

Sunderland Echo reports that Ellborg, uncapped at senior level, was drafted into a camp earlier this year amid injuries, having stepped up for Sunderland when Robin Roefs was sidelined.

Roefs has since returned to the starting line-up and Potter has turned to experience. AIK’s former Swansea City keeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt is included with Viktor Johansson of Stoke City and Jacob Widell Zetterstrom of Derby County. Nordfeldt returned for the March play-offs and looks most likely to be number one this summer.

Sunderland will still have strong representation at the tournament. Granit Xhaka, Omar Alderete, Habib Diarra and Nilson Angulo are regulars for Switzerland, Paraguay, Senegal and Ecuador, who have all qualified. If fit, those players are locks for their squads.

Sadiki is a DR Congo regular if fit, while Roefs could be selected by the Netherlands. Brian Brobbey and Lutsharel Geertruida are strong contenders for that squad after recent call-ups by Ronald Koeman. Chemsdine Talbi made his first start for Morocco on Tuesday and, having been in their recent AFCON squad, seems likely to travel.

Wilson Isidor will also travel after opting to represent Haiti, making his first appearances and scoring his first goal during the current break. Simon Adingra and Arthur Masuaku could feature for Ivory Coast and DR Congo respectively, though there is uncertainty over whether they will still be Sunderland players by the summer.
