Opta’s season projections have Sunderland finishing 12th in the Premier League on 51.15 points after their dramatic Tyne-Wear derby victory at Newcastle United. According to Opta, the Black Cats are forecast to end just behind Fulham and Newcastle.

Regis Le Bris’ side fell behind inside the opening 10 minutes at St James Park when Anthony Gordon punished a Luke O’Nien header. Chemsdine Talbi levelled from close range just before the hour, then Brian Brobbey struck in the final minute, beating Aaron Ramsdale at the second attempt.

The result completed a league double over the Magpies and extended Sunderland’s unbeaten run in league derby fixtures to 11 games. They head into the final international break sitting 11th, three points off the European places.

Opta’s table has Arsenal top on 84.77 points, ahead of Manchester City on 74.45, Manchester United on 66.06 and Aston Villa on 65.04. Newcastle are projected 10th with 52.03 points, Fulham 11th with 51.92 and Sunderland 12th, narrowly clear of AFC Bournemouth on 50.88.

Le Bris hailed a big achievement, acknowledging a tough first half against a strong Newcastle and an intense crowd. He said the team reacted after an early mistake, adjusted at half-time and showed their quality after the break, adding the win means a great deal to the squad, staff and fans, and that they want to keep improving.
