Surprising: Liam Delap beats, Enzo, Joao Pedro and Estevao in key attacking stat

We’re two thirds of the way through the Premier League season now, and it’s time to look at how the whole squad are getting on.

After battering Wolves yesterday, Chelsea moved to the top of the xG table. They have 47.2 on the season, with Manchester United trailing on 44.9. Arsenal, who are running away with the league, are on 44.1.

That’s great news – it shows we’re making chances. Of course we need to put more of them away, and defend leads better, but that’s usually more easily fixed than a lack of threat.

Delap tops goals per 90 metric

Chelsea’s top xG per 90 players.

A look at the top 10 players in the squad by their goals per 90 is largely as you’d expect. Cole Palmer hasn’t played consistently, but games like yesterday where he had two penalties boost his average, and he tops the table.

Behind him are Enzo Fernandez, who also gets a few penalties but has been a general box threat this season, Joao Pedro (who is our striker, and you’d expect to be up there, but has only really hit form recently), then Estevao and our other attackers.

But perhaps a little surprisingly, squeezed into second place, is Liam Delap. The striker has really struggled in front of goal this season, but is at least taking shots and getting chances when he’s on the pitch. Maybe this is wishful thinking, but for those writing him off, this is hopefully a sign that things can improve.

In other news…

Pedro Neto is struggling right now – yesterday was another poor game for the Portuguese winger. Only Alejandro Garnacho’s poor form and Jamie Gittens’ poor form is keeping Neto in the team right now.

Moises Caicedo’s stats from the game were remarkable. We’re not sure we’ve ever seen so many defensive contributions as the midfield dynamo had yesterday.
