Liverpool FC is undergoing a significant shift in its leadership structure, with Director of Communications Susan Black set to step down at the end of the season. After 14 years in senior roles at the club, her departure marks another major change behind the scenes at Anfield. The Club Official Site announced the news
Black’s exit coincides with a period of transformation at Liverpool. The club recently confirmed Michael Edwards’ return as CEO of Football at Fenway Sports Group, this time wielding broader authority than in his previous tenure as sporting director. His reappointment was swiftly followed by the arrival of Richard Hughes, who stepped in as Liverpool’s new sporting director after leaving Bournemouth.
Since joining the club in 2011, Black has been instrumental in shaping Liverpool’s communication strategies and external relations, becoming one of the most influential voices in the club’s executive structure.
Beyond her communications role, Black played a pivotal part in Liverpool FC Women’s progress. In 2020, she was appointed to the women’s team board alongside CEO Billy Hogan and Mike Gordon, president of Fenway Sports Group. Under her leadership, Liverpool FC Women secured a return to the Women’s Super League and finalised a crucial 10-year lease to host their home games at St Helens Stadium.
Additionally, Black’s influence extended to the LFC Foundation, where she served as a board member, helping to drive the club’s charitable efforts. Her work ensured that both Liverpool FC Women and the Foundation remained integral to the club’s long-term vision.
As part of a structured transition, Craig Evans, Liverpool FC’s current Vice President of Communications, will step up as Senior Vice President of Communications from 1 June 2025. Evans will take over Black’s responsibilities, leading the club’s communication function during a period of significant change at Anfield.
Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan paid tribute to Black’s contributions, stating:
“On behalf of the entire club, I would like to express my gratitude for Susan’s years of dedication and leadership across our communications, LFC Women and LFC Foundation functions. She has played a pivotal role in all three areas alongside her role as one of the long-standing members of our executive team.”
Reflecting on her departure, Black said:
“It really has been a great privilege to work for this incredible football club over the last 14 years.”
“We are blessed at LFC to have so many incredibly talented, gifted and professional individuals who work together to ensure our club goes from strength to strength.”
Her legacy, particularly in shaping Liverpool FC’s external image and developing the women’s team, will remain a crucial part of the club’s modern history.
