Several Sweden players questioned Dutch referee Danny Makkelie after their 0-3 World Cup defeat by France on Tuesday, arguing he was too lenient on the winners. The result ended Graham Potter’s side’s campaign.

Expressen reports that Victor Lindelöf felt France were awarded some soft free-kicks as Sweden tried to be aggressive in the duels.

Gabriel Gudmundsson suggested France’s star power influenced decisions, saying referees might not whistle as often against them. He added that far more fouls could have been given.

Viktor Gyökeres initially claimed Sweden did not win a single free-kick in the second half, although they in fact had six. He later toned down his remarks and said he was caught by an elbow to the face.

Potter declined to comment on the officiating, instead noting his team had come up against a great side.
