Final quarter-final berth up for grabs
The World Cup’s eighth and last quarter-finalist will be confirmed this afternoon as Switzerland face Colombia in Vancouver, Canada. Switzerland come into the tie hoping to progress beyond the round of 16 for the first time in 72 years, and will consider themselves favourites after enjoying a solid campaign to date. An underwhelming draw with Qatar in their opening fixture has been followed by big wins over Bosnia, Canada and Algeria.
Colombia, meanwhile, are one of the surprise packages of the tournament. Spurred on by Bayern Munich’s Luis Diaz and an enthusiastic crop of supporters backing them at the tournament, they have only conceded once en route to this stage of the tournament. A 1-0 win over Ghana last time out was enough to see them into the last-16, where they will face their toughest test since holding Portugal to a goalless draw in their final group stage match.
Whoever comes out on top here will face Argentina in the quarter-finals. Follow the action as it happens below with Standard Sport’s dedicated match blog, complete with expert insight and analysis.
