Italy failed in the play-off final in Bosnia and Herzegovina, drawing 1-1 then losing 4-1 on penalties, so they will miss the World Cup. L'Équipe highlighted Haris Tabakovic as the hero.
Nikola Vasilj’s errant pass to Barella led directly to Keane’s opener in the 15th minute.
Amar Memic repeatedly unsettled Italy and, as he broke through late in the first half, Alessandro Bastoni dived in and was sent off.
Tabakovic replaced Basic in the 71st minute and levelled in the 79th minute, reacting first after Donnarumma’s save. He then converted his kick in the shootout.
Vasilj steadied himself with a stop from Retegui in the 25th minute and denied Esposito at 105+1, before helping Bosnia and Herzegovina in the shootout.
For Italy, Riccardo Calafiori impressed with composure and last-ditch interventions. Federico Dimarco, though, failed to impose himself after celebrating Bosnia and Herzegovina’s semi-final win over Wales before kick-off.
