Newcastle United fell to a demoralising 2-1 defeat to Barcelona on their return to the Champions League at St James’ Park last night.
The Magpies made a lively start to the game, but conceded two goals in the second half.
Anthony Gordon scored a late consolation, but it was a disappointing night for Eddie Howe’s men.
Here are some of the key talking points from the game.
Howe left Nick Woltemade out of the starting XI. This was a surprising call from Howe as Woltemade scored on his debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend.
The 47-year-old’s decision to play Gordon through the middle did not pay off. While he eventually got on the scoresheet, he was largely ineffectual.
Marcus Rashford opened the scoring with a fine header early in the second half before doubling their advantage with a stunning 20-yard drive on 67 minutes.
The England international has been used sparingly by manager Hansi Flick, but the forward will be hoping for more first-team opportunities on the back of yesterday’s performance.
Anthony Elanga’s scorching pace caused Barcelona problems, and he should have had at least two assists from the excellent chances he created.
Elanga only arrived at the club for £55 million this summer, but he has hit the ground running, featuring in five matches across all competitions.
