Chelsea have held new talks over a move or Ajax left back Jorell Hato as they look to sign a new defender according to reports.

The squad are now having a well earned break following the Club World Cup success against Paris Saint Germain on Sunday.

The players will have three weeks off before preparing for the new season, and Chelsea are expected to be active in the transfer window.

Chelsea hold fresh Jorell Hato talks

The Blues have already been busy, and have made three attacking signings in Liam Delap, Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens.

Delap and especially Pedro have already made an impact, but there are still areas of the squad which need reinforcing.

Despite the brilliance of Marc Cucurella, there’s no back-up to the Spaniard and the Blues would have a major issue if he got injured.

There were links to Hato earlier this summer, but those have gone quiet for a number weeks, but Jacobs has reported on talkSPORT that Chelsea have held fresh talks over the 19-year-old.

The report adds Hato appeals to the Blues because he can play both left back and centre back, with a transfer expected to cost around £40m, with the Dutch international also on Liverpool’s radar.

Despite still being a teenager Hato is already a Dutch international and has played over 100 games for Ajax, whilst he ticks the boxes in terms of Chelsea’s recruitment.

Renato Veiga to leave

The reason Chelsea need a back-up to Cucurella is because Renato Veiga is set to leave the club despite only joining last summer.

Veiga spent the second half of last season on loan at Juventus because he wanted to play as a centre back, which he wasn’t going to do at Chelsea.

The Portugal international wasn’t part of the Club World Cup squad and is attracting interest from Bayern Munich, with Chelsea in line to make a profit on the 21-year-old.
