Cunningham was a respected presence in the community beyond the pitch, notably through his involvement at St Nicholas Catholic Primary School in Gipton.

He acted as caretaker at the school while living in a bungalow on the grounds.

In March 2025, he reportedly left the school grounds and moved into a local care home.

No further details about his death have been released.
