Edin Terzic, the new Athletic head coach, earned the only trophy of his playing days at Westfalia Herne, where his face now features on the club’s mural of legends.

El Correo reports that while studying Sports Science at Ruhr-Bochum University, he played regional football. He started at Sportfreunde Oestrich, now Iserlohn, then joined Westfalia Herne, 60 kilometres from his hometown, Menden.

He won the Westphalia Cup with Herne, a regional tournament that grants a German Cup spot. The final finished 6-4 against Delbrücker SC, Terzic scored twice, but a move to Wattenscheid 09 meant he missed the cup months later.

He returned to Herne before ending his career at Cloppenburg and Borussia Dröschede. At the ground he is on the wall of legends that greets visitors on a rainy day.

Andreas Schmidt acts as guide, pulling a shirt from a cupboard. He asks for 10 euros, then accepts five as there is no change for 50, a snapshot of the place’s modesty.

Oliver Ruhnert, his first coach at Iserlohn, says regional football has changed over the past 20 years. He recalls a more authentic game, with community kids playing for fun, while today 12-year-olds have nutrition plans and video analysis. In Terzic’s time, hard graft in the mud came first.
