The Athletic: Everton add Ridle Baku as alternative for Johnston | OneFootball

Ridle Baku is seen as one of the alternatives for Everton if they fail to reach an agreement with Celtic for the transfer of Alistair Johnston. The Athletic reported the Canadian international is still Everton’s priority, but they are also exploring a potential deal for RB Leipzig right-back.

The 28-year-old is entering the final year of his current contract at Leipzig. However, there is a clause in the contract that automatically extends it by one more year based on appearances next season.

Baku joined Leipzig from Wolfsburg at the start of 2025 for only €4.5 million. Under the new coach Martín Demichelis, Baku is likely to compete with Benjamin Henrichs for a starting berth if he stays at the club.

David Moyes’ side used designated center-back Jake O'Brien in the right-back position during the 2025/26 campaign, while Séamus Coleman has now left the club after nearly two decades of service.

Johnston is Everton’s priority to fill the gap, but negotiations with the Scottish champions have been difficult so far. The 27-year-old right-back was one of the stars of Canada’s historic World Cup run. On the contrary, Baku didn't make the cut for Germany's World Cup squad.
