Chelsea’s performance against Bayern Munich last night in a 3-1 defeat is creating a few questions.

Some say it was a solid performance for an inexperienced Blues team who were ultimately beaten by their own mistakes.

Others say this team didn’t ever look like it had the belief they could win.

In terms of individual performances, there were some who should get credit either way.

Robert Sanchez was excellent in goal, making crucial saves to keep his team in it. It was obvious why he was so frustrated that his team conceded the third from a horrific error, moments after he had made a save to keep it to 2-1.

Cole Palmer was our only real attacking threat, scoring our goal after running half the pitch and consistently being the only player able to make anything happen and find space in the middle.

For starters he was heavily involved. He contested the most ground duels (12) and won 9 of them. He also contested 4 aerial duels. His physical presence was clearly a weapon – he was fouled 4 times, more than anyone else on the pitch. His 3 completed dribbles were more than anyone else, and he also made an impressive 2 tackles.

JP is often going to be isolated in games against top sides like this one, but even in this defeat he managed to impress. Certainly his performance is one of the positives we can take from this defeat is that he’s going to fit in just fine in the Champions League.
