Diego Maradona once clashed on the pitch with Gallardo, and not Marcelo, in a wry exchange that has lived long in memory. The spat turned on a crack about appearances.

According to LaNumer12.com.ar, before joining Boca, Maradona was starring for Argentinos Juniors when he tangled with Huracán midfielder Miguel Ángel Gallardo. Maradona teased him that he was uglier than he was.

Gallardo went to the referee to complain he was being called ugly, and Maradona later said the official even gestured as if conceding the point.

After the match, Gallardo said in an interview that Maradona was a bad person because of the taunt. Maradona, laughing as he told it later, said Gallardo should put up with it, keep quiet, and that he had been too obvious.

Maradona added that if anyone called him ugly during a game, he would hail them as an idol and invite them to say it right there. He later also worked as Boca's manager.
