“The future looks very bright” – Arne Slot backs Liverpool to bounce back despite PSG defeat | OneFootball

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has backed his side to bounce back from their Champions League quarter-final elimination against Paris Saint-Germain.

The Reds welcomed the reigning champions to Anfield, hoping to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit, but were put to the sword once again by a similar scoreline.

After failing to take their chances, Liverpool were punished late on as Balon d’Or holder Ousmane Dembele netted a brace to seal PSG’s place in the semi-finals with a 4-0 aggregate victory.

Speaking after the game, Slot praised his side for showing fight in the second leg but blamed their exit on their failure to take their chances.

“I think we made a lot of progress compared to last week,” Slot said in his post-match press conference.

“I have to give a lot of credit to the players, how hard they worked. I have to give a lot of credit to our fans, how they helped us tonight to execute our game plan.

“Unfortunately it’s one of the many examples of this season where we weren’t able to score from the many chances we had.

“Again, we were so underperforming in terms of xG and that is just an ongoing thing with us throughout the whole season.

“But the future looks very bright for this team, for this club because we’ve shown that we can compete with the champions of Europe in our stadium.”

Slot now has only the Premier League to focus on after crashing out of the FA Cup following a humiliating 4-0 defeat against Manchester City.

The Dutch manager is under a lot of pressure from the fans despite retaining the backing of the board.

Failure to qualify for the Champions League may be the final nail in his coffin. Fortunately, Liverpool are on track to finish in the top five.

Slot’s side currently occupy the fifth Champions League spot, and sit four points ahead of sixth-placed Chelsea, who have fallen off the wagon over the past few months.
