Manchester City have a clear plan this summer to lock down important players for now and the future on long-term contract extensions. Earlier this week, it was confirmed that Phil Foden has signed a contract extension which runs until 2030. The FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders have now announced that Abdukodir Khusanov has signed a contract extension that will run until 2031. That is fantastic news for Khusanov and City as the Uzbekistan international is on his way to becoming one of the elite defenders in the Premier League and Europe.

Abdukodir Khusanov is the latest player to sign a contract extension with Manchester City.

Manchester City has announced that Abdukodir Khusanov has signed a contract extension with the club. Khusanov’s new contract will run until the summer of 2031. Since signing for City from Lens in January of 2025, Khusanov has firmly established himself as a key player in Manchester City’s defence. He showed flashes of what was coming during the latter stages of 2024-25 season. However  last season was Khusanov’s breakout campaign. He started in 16 of Manchester City’s last 19 Premier League fixtures and his pace, power and ability to cover ground at the back became crucial to Pep Guardiola’s side. Khusanov was also an important member of Manchester City’s FA Cup and Carabao Cup wins last season.

Speaking with mancity.com after signing his contract extension, Abdukodir Khusanov shared his pride in extending his contract with Manchester City. He also thanked the City fans for their support, and added that he is now looking forward to the challenge of impressing new City manager Enzo Maresca. Khusanov said after his new deal was confirmed: “This is a great day for me and my family – I am really happy to extend my stay at City.”

“I’ve enjoyed every minute since I arrived in Manchester and I feel I am growing and learning a lot as a player. I have a new challenge now, which is to impress Enzo Maresca and his staff and ensure I am in his team regularly. I am determined to do that.”

“Thank you to the City fans for all of your support. It has been really important as I’ve settled in England and the Premier League. Now I am only looking forward. I’m ready to do everything I can to help this Club be as a successful as possible.”

Abdukodir Khusanov is already a City cult hero, but he promises to blossom into so much more.

It hasn’t taken long for Abdukodir Khusanov to become a fan favourite at Manchester City. His laid-back personality and take-no-prisoners playing style have made him a hero to the City faithful. In a way, Khusanov is a throwback to centre-backs of years gone by. His crunching tackles are a standout component of his play, but Khusanov has shown that he has the potential to be so much more than that.

Abdukodir Khusanov has the talent, mindset and potential to become an elite centre-back in the Premier League and Europe. His pace is ideally suited to the modern Premier League and is already vital to his team. The way City play with a high defensive line means that Khusanov’s pace is crucial. Also, his timing of a challenge, ability to run back towards his own goal and overall strength mean that he is so much more than just a quick defender.

In possession, Khusanov has developed at a rate of knots at Manchester City. His ability to play a quality long ball over the top of City’s opponents’ defensive lines has improved out of sight. As has his passing game, which now suits Manchester City’s build-up play. Also, Khusanov isn’t afraid to dribble his way out of trouble at the back, so he is slowly morphing into a powerful ball-playing centre-back.
