European football returns to Wearside for the first time since 1973 after a breathless final day at the Stadium of Light, as Chelsea’s first league visit in almost a decade unfolded amid a raucous, play-off-tinged backdrop.

They began 10th on 51 points, one behind Chelsea and Brentford and two off Brighton, so a win plus help elsewhere could open the door. Sunderland Echo says the noise was electric, the cat eyes display recalling Sheffield Wednesday.

Trai Hume justified his selection on the right by scoring from Luke O’Nien’s pass, a nod to their League One journey. By the interval Sunderland were up to seventh as Brentford drew Liverpool and Brighton trailed Manchester United 2-1.

Soon after the restart Brian Brobbey had the chance to make it 2-0, but Robert Sanchez saved. While leading 2-1 around the hour, Noah Sadiki berated Robin Roefs for not releasing early before Régis Le Bris introduced Wilson Isidor for Brobbey and Habib Diarra for Nilson Angulo.

Wesley Fofana’s second yellow left Chelsea with 10, and Diarra then slipped when set to make it 3-1, slicing over. Ten minutes of added time followed, the home crowd roaring every intervention as United led Brighton 3-0 and Liverpool drew 1-1 with Brentford.

Late on Gary Rowell’s name rang out and Chris Rigg replaced Enzo Le Fée. At full time Luke O’Nien celebrated with Lynden Gooch and Dan Neil, and Dan Ballard, on crutches, joined as Granit Xhaka and Le Bris addressed supporters.
