Two Chelsea players spoke out about the club’s current struggles, but only one of them was punished for it. This is why.

When Enzo Fernandez and Marc Cucurella got different treatment following their comments in the international break, the instinct of many was to say it was unfair.
Both had questioned the Chelsea project, and both had spoken negatively about the decision to sack Enzo Maresca in January. But only Enzo was punished, receiving a two game ban from his own club.
According to Nizaar Kinsella’s piece for the BBC today, the difference was not down to what they said, but to how they responded.
“Cucurella was viewed as genuinely apologetic for failing to raise his concerns privately before speaking publicly. He addressed repeated questions about a potential return to his boyhood club Barcelona during a news conference, but subsequently reaffirmed his commitment to Chelsea.”
Meanwhile Enzo “understood to remain keen on a move to Real,” and presumably wasn’t as outwardly contrite as Cucurella.
To us, there were other differences too: Cucurella made it clear his short term future was at Chelsea; while Enzo cast doubt over next season. Enzo also undermined the initial backing he got from his manager after his first set of comments following the PSG game, something the coach and the club were never going to take kindly to.
The same BBC article claims that the club have made promises to some of their senior players about signing top quality reinforcements in three areas of the team.
Chelsea have been rumoured with interest in bringing back Lewis Hall to the club – something that would make them very popular with fans.
