Atletico Madrid have had a tough start to the new season, with two draws and one defeat in their opening three La Liga matches. After a summer of big spending, the pressure is on Diego Simeone to provide a sustained challenge to Barcelona and Real Madrid in the title race, which was not possible during the previous campaign.
The higher-ups at Atleti will be closely following the situation, and that includes club president Enrique Cerezo. As per Diario AS, he spoke on the difficult start to the 2025-26 campaign that Los Colchoneros have had.
“From the beginning of the season, we believe that we have a magnificent team, a fabulous coach who knows all the players he has very well. What we really have to start doing is what we want, which is to win titles.
“The flight will begin to go up from Saturday. Now we’re getting ready to see exactly if we really get out of this impasse we’ve had at the beginning. We haven’t had a good start, the situation we’re in is not normal, but in football anything is possible. We hope from next Saturday against Villarreal to start working and to add points.”

Cerezo was also asked about the possibility of the RiyadhAir Metropolitano hosting the 2027 Champions League final. Atleti have already submitted their bid, and although reports have taken it for granted that the club’s efforts will be successful, nothing has officially been decided yet.
“It is one of the candidates and possibly the definitive candidate, but we still have to wait for what UEFA decides.”
Atleti return to action after the international break with a crucial clash against Villarreal at the Metropolitano, and the pressure will be on to secure that elusive first victory of the new season.
