Real Madrid have made a shocking entry into the race to sign Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig, and matters have moved fast in a matter of hours.

The Merengues have registered interest in the player in the past as well, but PSG beat them in the race and closed an agreement with the player.

Now, however, Real Madrid seem to have identified the teenage winger as the backup target after Michael Olise’s operation was deemed unfeasible. 

In a matter of hours, they even launched an opening bid of €90 million with €10 million in add-ons, but the Germans have rejected that bid, hoping for a bigger payout.

The sum expected

As reported by Ben Jacobs in a recent update, Leipzig want a sum of €130 million fixed for Diomande from Real Madrid and are aware that the club are capable of making such a large payout.

They point out Florentino Perez’s election campaign promise of making a €150 million signing if he won the election this summer.

Eventually, he did, unsurprisingly, win, but no big money signing of that stature has been made yet, and Leipzig believe there is no reason Diomande cannot be the recipient of that price tag.

A tricky claim

Michael Olise was initially expected to be Real Madrid’s big right-winger signing, and word even had it that Los Blancos could shell out over €200 million for the Bayern Munich star.

Real Madrid’s decision to go for Diomande, who also plays on the right wing, may well be a direct declaration that they are abandoning the race for Olise and that the €150 million or higher budget is still available.

Leipzig, thus, are being prudent in the situation and looking to extract as much financial gain as they can from Real Madrid. Negotiations, needless to say, may prove to be complicated on that front. 

As matters stand, the difference between Real Madrid and Leipzig’s valuation of the player is around €40 million in fixed payments, and it may not be as simple as initially expected.
