Olympique Lyonnais made it all the way to the Coupe de France final last season, ultimately losing to Paris Saint-Germain, however, they suffered a premature and humiliating exit this time around.

Lyon suffered their Coupe de France exit at the hands of fifth-tier side Bourgoin-Jallieu on penalties, after the game ended 2-2 after 90 minutes. OL lost on penalties 4-2. In that shootout, two of their most experienced players, Alexandre Lacazette and Corentin Tolisso missed as the minnows wrapped up an unlikely qualification for the next round of the competition.

It means that Lyon’s wait for their first Coupe de France triumph since 2012 goes on. In his post-match press duties, manager Pierre Sage did not mine his words. “We will have to face our shame, to those close to us, to those who love the club, to our managers, to everyone,” he said during the mixed-zone interview.

Les Gones’ manager said that he wasn’t targetting any particular player but “all of them at the same time”. Asked by beIN Sports whether  Bourgoin-Jallieu’s victory was another example of the magic of the cup, Sage responded, “For us, it is the tragedy of the cup.”

Lyon will be looking to bounce back quickly when they face Toulouse FC at the Groupama Stadium on Saturday.
