Harry Kane’s transfer to FC Bayern is still considered one of the most significant deals of recent years. However, comments by Thomas Tuchel regarding alleged resistance within the Munich front office are now sparking debate. Transfer insider Christian Falk strongly disputes the former Bayern coach’s account.

With Harry Kane, FC Bayern pulled off a real transfer coup in the summer of 2023. The English national team player quickly became an undisputed key player and lived up to the high expectations at Säbener Straße.

However, comments by Thomas Tuchel are now sparking debate. The current England national team coach stated after the successful World Cup round of 16 match against Mexico that he had had to advocate for the Kane transfer at the time—“against some other opinions.”

Bayern had already been interested in Kane before Tuchel took office

Transfer insider Christian Falk strongly contradicts this account. The BILD soccer correspondent emphasizes that FC Bayern had already been working intensively on signing him even before Tuchel had become coach in Munich.

According to Falk, there had even been a secret meeting with the player’s side while Julian Nagelsmann was still in charge. Although preparations for the coaching change were underway in parallel following the loss to Bayer Leverkusen, the transfer plans involving Kane had existed independently of that.

Tuchel initially wanted time to think it over

As Falk further reports, Bayern officials informed Tuchel about the plans for Kane immediately after discussions regarding his hiring and asked him whether he would support the transfer.

According to the insider, however, there was no immediate commitment. Instead, Tuchel initially asked for a few days to think it over. Only then did he inform the club officials that he, too, wanted to sign Kane.

From Falk’s perspective, there were never any fundamental disagreements within Bayern’s leadership regarding the transfer. Consequently, those at Säbener Straße were surprised by Tuchel’s recent statements.

It is impossible to conclusively determine from the outside which version fully reflects the actual sequence of events. One thing is certain, however: Christian Falk paints a significantly different picture than the former Bayern coach and clearly questions his account of the events.
