Superstar Kylian Mbappé talks about the future of Dayot Upamecano, making a point in the direction of FC Bayern.
Kylian Mbappé has caused a stir with a piquant statement. At a press conference of the French national team in Paris, the superstar spoke about the future of his team-mate Dayot Upamecano – and couldn’t resist taking a swipe at FC Bayern.
„He’s in a great phase, plays for a great club, there are hardly any better ones – but there are better ones,“ laughed Mbappé when asked whether he was trying to convince Upamecano to move to Real Madrid. The French superstar then emphasized: „But I’ll stay out of this discussion out of respect for his club and so as not to put him under any more pressure.“
The comment is explosive – after all, Mbappé himself plays for Real Madrid, and the Whites, along with Paris Saint-Germain, are among the clubs currently said to be keeping an eye on Upamecano. It remains to be seen whether the striker was possibly alluding to his current employer with his joke, but it would fit in with Real Madrid’s self-image.
Mbappé also explained that he fully understands the international interest in his compatriot: „When you talk about the best defender in the world and this season, he is part of that debate.“ The 2018 world champion praised his team-mate as „strong in high defending, tackling and building up play“.
Meanwhile, Munich are still hoping for a contract extension. Upamecano’s current contract expires in the summer, and although talks with the club management around Max Eberl and Christoph Freund are said to be developing positively, an agreement has not yet been reached. According to BILD, Bayern have submitted a greatly improved offer that would put the Frenchman in the club’s salary elite with an annual salary of around €20 million – just behind Jamal Musiala and Harry Kane.
However, interest from Real Madrid and PSG is creating pressure, with both top clubs in a financial position to make a competitive offer. Particularly tricky: Upamecano’s advisor Moussa Sissoko is considered to have close links with PSG and also looks after Ousmane Dembélé, among others.

Mbappé himself obviously didn’t want to let the fuss about his compatriot’s future get too big. „I’m staying out of it,“ said the 26-year-old with a smile – but his words are likely to have been carefully registered in Munich. Because whether as a joke or a little tip: when Mbappé talks about „better clubs“, he was probably thinking of his own club Real Madrid.
